Assistant Principal Nick Karr
Assistant Principal Nick Karr is ready to hit the ground running after being named to the position during the Salem School Board meeting in July.
Originally from Washington State, Karr moved to Mitchell, Indiana, when he was 9 years old. They moved to a family farm in the area and he quickly became involved in sports and 4H. After graduating in 2011, he headed to Purdue University to study education. While there, he met his wife, Abby.
After graduating from Purdue in 2015, they both got teaching positions in Anderson, Indiana, and that is where they began their careers in the education field. In 2019, Karr decided to go back to school to get his administration degree at Ball State University.
When asked what made him choose to go into administration, Karr said his parents encouraged him to “drive up” in his career. He said they both advanced in their own fields by constantly asking “how can I do more.” It seemed natural for him to want to do the same.
Soon after their daughter, Shae, was born, the couple decided they’d like to be closer to family and moved back to Mitchell, where Karr has taught for the last two years.
“I really love working with kids,” he said, adding that he has enjoyed coaching soccer and leading a table-top game club while at Mitchell.
Karr comes to Salem excited to meet the staff and get to know everyone. He said he is excited to get involved, participate in clubs and attend sporting events. He’s ready to find people who have the same desire he has to help students and create a positive environment.
“It’s important to me to find people in my building who have the same visions I do,” he said. “Helping kids is my passion.”
This is Karr’s first administrative position and he is eager to get to work.
“I’m excited to be here,” he said. “Salem has a lot going on and I’m excited to be part of the change!”
