SHS Media

Student media is a growing interest at Salem High School and teachers JD Wade-Swift and Monika Spaulding are excited to lead their media programs in this new direction. The two are combining their student media groups under one name to offer more consistent, current news coverage of all things going on at Salem Schools.

Wade-Swift leads Salem Lions News Network with The Salem Show, a school broadcast news program, and live streaming events, as well as ROAR radio. Spaulding leads the SHS Newspaper staff and the Lyon Yearbook staff.

The two teachers saw that many schools operated these programs under one name at area media competitions they were attending and decided to do the same. This fall, you will see Salem High School Media more often in the coverage of school events and activities, from live streams to photos and news stories. SHS Media won’t just be for high school coverage, but for the whole corporation.

“JD and I already work together a lot and we are excited to combine the efforts of our students,” said Spaulding. “We have a lot of crossover already, so it just makes sense.”

Wade-Swift agreed, adding, “Collaboration is always a huge key to being successful in the media industry and a huge part of education. Students working together while honing and sharing their strong skill sets in order to put out a successful product, like a broadcast, is a huge asset for our media program.”

Combining the staff will also allow more students to take the classes and work in the areas they are most interested in and most strong in, whether that be photography or anchoring a news broadcast.

“JD and I both bring our own talents and knowledge to the job and it’s going to be fun working together for the benefit of our students and the school corporation as a whole!” said Spaulding.

SHS Media will launch on social media July 1. Watch the social media pages for back-to-school information and coverage.
