A new face is joining the staff at Salem High School this school year. Steve Churchman, a graduate of Eastern High School, is the new junior/senior counselor. He spent 13 years as the band director at West Washington and 24 years in Greater Clark Schools (Jeffersonville High School Counselor and River Valley Middle School Counselor) and is looking forward to calling SHS his new home.
“I’m very happy to be a Lion!” he said.
Churchman graduated from Indiana University Bloomington with a bachelor's degree in Music Education and earned a Masters in Secondary Education and a Masters in School Counseling from IU Southeast.
“I have resided in Salem my entire adult life and want to be a part of our schools' success,” he said, adding that he has five siblings who also live in Washington County.
Churchman looks forward to meeting new people and getting involved in school activities that support Salem students.
“I enjoy counseling because I am able to help students envision what their future could be and help them achieve their goals,” he said, adding it is “very challenging to see students struggle with difficult personal situations.”
When he is not working in the school, he enjoys landscaping and his pets.
“I recently got two German Shepherd puppies that are sisters!” he said.
Churchman has also managed Mill Creek Greenhouse in Salem for over 30 years.
