Mrs. Morgan at Big 10 game

Virtual Reality headsets are always fun to use especially when the games you can play seem so real. Jessica Morgan Salem Schools STEAM director will receive six brand new VR headsets, thanks to a Big Ten football championship grant, funded by Indiana Sports Corp.

In addition to the VR headsets, Morgan also received tickets for the Big Ten championship football game last Saturday. She got the idea for the headsets after a teacher at Eastern let Morgan and two teachers at Bradie Shrum Elementary practice using their headsets to see if she really wanted to get them. When Morgan used the VR she got to kayak in the North Pole and see penguins. After that experience, Morgan knew she wanted them for the kids to use in the STEAM lab.

“They can be used for a lot of different subjects,” she said. “You can use them for subjects that go along with the content you have been learning.”

Morgan is very excited about the grant. She has wanted the headsets for more than a year. The cost was $4,000 for all six of the headsets. SHS English teacher Megan Elgin helped Morgan with her grant application to make sure that there were no spelling errors. She wanted to make sure that her grant was good.

She found out about the grant at a STEAM fellowship with ROI. After looking into it, Morgan thought that this was a good opportunity, so she went for it.

“I didn't think I was gonna be able to get it,” she said. She has applied for small grants in the past for classroom supplies, but nothing this big. She was surprised when she got the notification.

Although she is a Kentucky fan, she was looking forward to attending the Big 10 football championship game between Purdue and Michigan.
