The counselor's talked to students during their counseling time in September on the following topics:
Suicide Prevention Month
Types of Boundaries
Advocating for yourself
Growth Mindset Activity:
Thinking outside the card

The SMS Care Closet will hold a Care Drive during Parent-Teacher Conferences Oct. 17 and 18. We will have some of our Care Closet items available for families those two days! All items will be free.

Mrs. Abner's sixth grade digital citizenship classes have been working on engineering by building roller coasters.



Students are studying nutrition in Mrs. Snelling's 8th grade health classes. Today, Mason and Ryker made Mrs. Snelling lunch because they are chefs. It was delicious AND they earned extra credit! Way to put your learning in action, guys!

The After-School Program is partnering with the YMCA. They are going to come in and host the Take a Breath program on Mondays starting Sept. 23 at 3:30 p.m.


Shout out to Mr. Catlin for being the first teacher to bring his students to the STEAM lab to 3D print! His 8th grade agriculture students designed farm animals or plants and are working on getting them printed.

Eighth grade science students in Ms. Myer's classes have been learning about matter and the components that make up matter. Today they made compounds and molecules during a hands-on-lab.








Students in Laura Mahuron's science classes have been blowing bubbles during a science lab this week! Who says learning can't be fun?





Students in Mrs. Consley's math classes worked on fractions this week in the STEAM lab using hands-on kits. The students worked through problems and recorded their answers after visually solving them.
Every month, the school counselors will meet with students to do guidance lessons. This month, they have been talking to students about guidance resources. Topics for the month are: What is bullying? What do you do?; self harm and how to get help; and tattling vs. concern. For more information about the counseling sessions contact the counselors at smscounselors@salemschools.us.

Life Skills students in Dusty Baker's class at SMS used Legos to learn about volume.


Mrs. Morris’s 7th grade classes visited the STEAM lab to work on computer science. They used their Chromebook’s to code microbits to show colors, change faces and play music.

SMS teachers enjoyed an ice cream social to celebrate a great start to the new school year!





Shout out to Mrs. Hall for being the first teacher of the year to use the STEAM lab. Sixth grade geography students designed and created maps this week. Students had a choice on whether to design a map of the school building or a map of the route they take to get to school.






Thanks to a grant from the Washington Community Foundation, STEAM lab students were able to plant seeds, grow vegetables and take the plants home as part of the Harvest Your Own Food Project.
