This morning Room 104 at Salem Middle School, also known as Lions 104, went on a field trip to visit the West Washington High School American Sign Language classroom taught by John Harkness.
Dusty Baker, who teaches Lions 104, said the group watched presentations by class members and then everyone had an open exchange between students-to-students and teachers/chaperones and Mr. Harkness.
"My students enjoyed the visit and wanted to stay longer," said Baker. "They were able to recognize many of the signs we've learned in class and learned new ones using context."
Baker said the class sent Harkness a thank you email and this was his response, "Thank you for coming! My students were excited and I was pleased with everyone's behavior. My students took a very profound viewpoint on the visit. They considered the idea of their ASL class might impact lives outside of our walls. Pretty deep for freshman and sophomores.
"I look forward to any other opportunities for us to work together for all our kids!"
